Room planning

Golf simulator safety: bounce-back, side barriers and padding

A golf ball leaves the club at well over 100 mph. The room has to absorb mishits as well as good shots.

Distance and screen gap

Keep about 10 ft between ball and screen where the room allows, and leave 8–12 inches behind the screen so it can give on impact rather than slapping a hard wall. Tension the screen with bungees rather than stretching it tight.

Side barriers, baffles and padding

  • Side netting or panels between the screen and the golfer catch shanks and toe shots.
  • A ceiling baffle above the screen stops skied shots reaching lights and joists.
  • Foam padding on exposed frame poles reduces rebounds.
  • A landing pad in front of the screen protects the floor and slows balls that drop short.

Protect the equipment

Ceiling-mount the projector above or just in front of the golfer, out of the ball's path, or use a floor enclosure. Keep launch monitors at the maker's stated position — too close and they can be hit.
